How to compete as a freelancer if you lack experience

A couple weeks ago, I sent an email to my list on how to handle sales objections.

And one of my readers replied back with a great question:

“Dylan, I’m an email writer and I’m struggling with this objection:

Why should clients listen to/pay me….when I don’t have any experience?

Here’s what I told him. (This advice is especially relevant to service providers like freelancers, coaches, agency owners, consultants, etc.)

How to find freelance clients if you don’t have experience:

Highlight your energy and enthusiasm to eclipse your lack of experience.

Let me explain.

Your more-established competitors definitely have advantages over you. After all, they have a track record of case studies which de-risks the end client’s decision.

But you have advantages over your more experienced competitors that you need to highlight…

For example, you:

• Have more bandwidth and free time, which can lead to more responsiveness.

• Have better pricing, which can lead to a greater R O I for your client.

• Have more to prove, and a greater need for testimonials. This can lead to you bringing your A-game to the project.

To cement my point, I even drafted him up a quick lil’ blurb of copy on how he might address this objection. Here it is:

Copywriting example for freelance email marketer:

“But here’s the thing: if you’re looking for the best or the most experienced email marketer, I’m not your guy. Seriously.

I’d love to be able to flaunt hundreds of case studies or revenue screenshots for you, but I don’t have them…
Yet.

But I’m gonna go above and beyond for every client I take on to make sure I get those glowing case studies. And – unlike if you hired a more experienced, proven email marketer – you can hire me at a discount. For now, at least… etc etc.”

The idea is simple: weaponize your weakness.

(Kinda like going into a job interview and saying, “my biggest weakness is that I work too hard” lol 🤣)

So, if you’re struggling to compete with a more established competitor… Own your shortcomings and attack the seams of your competition.

They have weaknesses too. And those are your opportunities.

Speaking of opportunities… I’m taking on 1 or 2 more private, done-for-you email marketing clients right now.

If you’re interested in hiring me to develop your email strategy, and write all your emails… And turn your subscribers into buyers while you focus on other areas of your business…
